The short answer
- Fastest: the direct ICE, about 3h43 for the best timetable, 4 to 5 hours for most.
- Cheapest: an early-booked Sparpreis, or FlixTrain, which takes about 5 hours.
- Arrival: Köln Hbf, next to the cathedral; some services stop at Köln Messe/Deutz, across the Rhine.
- Before you go: check the day's timetable on bahn.de, because the 2026 works lengthen some journeys.
Comparing the options
| Mode | Duration | Price seen | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| ICE (Deutsche Bahn) | about 3h43 to 5h | Super Sparpreis €9.99-29.99, Sparpreis €19.99-59.99, Flexpreis €90 to €151 and more | at least hourly during the day |
| FlixTrain | about 5h | often cheaper than the ICE | 8 to 10 departures a day, no restaurant car, tickets not interchangeable with DB |
| Bus (Flixbus) | longer than the train | from about €20 to €30 if booked early | duration to confirm on the operator's site |
| Car | about 5h30 to 6h (estimate) | fuel and any tolls | Cologne's environmental zone requires a sticker |
The ranges come from a train comparison site read on 30 October 2026, where the average ticket is around €51. Sources disagree on the lowest fare (€9.98, €9.99 or €19.99): check it when you book.
Stations and trains
In Berlin, ICE trains leave from the main station; see our guide to Berlin's main station. In Cologne, most trains arrive at Köln Hbf, at the foot of the cathedral. A Sparpreis ticket is tied to a specific train and hard to change; a Flexpreis is valid all day. The Deutschlandticket does not cover ICE trains: see AB, ABC and Deutschlandticket tickets.
Works and delays to expect in 2026
Berlin's Stadtbahn is closed to trains from 14 June to 12 December 2026; towards North Rhine-Westphalia there are fewer trains (at least one an hour) and some ICEs start or end at Charlottenburg. One source also says works on the Berlin-Hanover line from October 2026 lengthen journey times. Book with a margin if you have a connection.
