Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin: tickets, opening hours, exhibitions and Mies van der Rohe's glass temple

Updated on October 1, 2026

The Neue Nationalgalerie, at the Kulturforum a few minutes' walk from [Potsdamer Platz](/fr/attractions/potsdamer-platz), is the modern art museum of Berlin's Nationalgalerie. Its building, the last major work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, opened on 15 September 1968: a glass hall beneath a square steel roof measuring 64.8 m on each side, carried by only eight columns. Closed in 2015, it was restored by David Chipperfield Architects and reopened in August 2021. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, on Thursdays until 20:00, and closed on Mondays. The ticket for all exhibitions costs €20 (reduced €10); entry is free for under-18s, and for everyone on the first Thursday of the month from 16:00 to 20:00. Allow about 2 hours for the visit.

The upper hall, glazed on all four sides, has no interior columns: the eight steel columns that carry the roof stand outside, two on each side. It hosts the major temporary exhibitions, while the collections are shown on the lower level, beneath the granite terrace that overlooks the sculpture garden.

From 10 September 2026 to 7 March 2027, the glass hall hosts the Italian artist's first major solo exhibition in Germany, as winner of the 2026 Preis der Nationalgalerie. It brings together historical works and new pieces created for the building. Exhibition-only ticket: €16 (reduced €8).

Ruin and Rush. Berlin 1910–1930

Until 3 January 2027, around 35 works of Expressionism and New Objectivity portray 1920s Berlin, between glamour and misery: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's Potsdamer Platz (1914), Otto Dix's The Skat Players (1920), and works by George Grosz, Hannah Höch, Jeanne Mammen and Lotte Laserstein. Exhibition-only ticket: €10 (reduced €5).

The post-war collection

On the lower level, "Extreme Tension. Art between Politics and Society" shows the 1945 to 2000 collection in 14 sections until 4 April 2027, with Joseph Beuys, Francis Bacon, Bridget Riley, Rebecca Horn and Pipilotti Rist. It is visited together with "Gerhard Richter. 100 Works for Berlin", an open-ended presentation, for €14 (reduced €7).

The other exhibitions

"Christoph Schlingensief. Deutschlandsuche '99" runs until 25 April 2027, and Glenn Ligon's neon work "Double America" remains on view until 11 October 2026. Both are included in the €20 museum ticket.

Between the Neue Nationalgalerie and the [Philharmonie](/fr/attractions/philharmonie-de-berlin), the building site of the "berlin modern" museum, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, is meant to house the Nationalgalerie's collections, with artists such as Beuys, Beckmann and Richter. The topping-out was celebrated in October 2025, but moisture damage found in the structure has delayed the project again: completion is expected in 2030 at the earliest, and no official opening date has been announced.

Opening hours and tickets

Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, Thursdays until 20:00, closed on Mondays; closed on 24 and 31 December, open as on a Sunday on 25 and 26 December, and from 12:00 to 18:00 on 1 January 2027.
