Unter den Linden: Berlin's Grand Historic Boulevard

Updated on October 9, 2026

Unter den Linden ("under the lime trees") is the most famous avenue in Berlin's historic centre: about 1.5 km long, from the Brandenburg Gate to the Schlossbrücke, towards Museum Island. It runs past the State Opera, Humboldt University, the Neue Wache, the Zeughaus and Bebelplatz. The promenade is free and open day and night. Allow 45 minutes to stroll from one end to the other, two to three hours with a visit or two. Works and tree replanting may occasionally change the route of the central promenade.

Highlights

The lime-tree promenade

The lime-tree promenade

The central avenue, planted with lime trees, runs east from Pariser Platz. It extends an old track that linked the Hohenzollern palace to their hunting grounds; its present name comes from the trees that line it. This is where the palaces, the academy and Prussia's great institutions stood.

The State Opera

The State Opera

The Staatsoper Unter den Linden, halfway along the avenue, is one of Germany's great opera houses. See our page on the Staatsoper for visits and tickets.

Towards Museum Island

To the east the avenue crosses the Spree and becomes Karl-Liebknecht-Straße; just beyond, the Humboldt Forum and the cathedral herald Museum Island.

The Neue Wache and Bebelplatz

Two stops to make on foot: the Neue Wache memorial and Bebelplatz.
