The essentials with a baby
| Topic | What to know |
|---|---|
| Transport | Children under 6 travel free; strollers board buses, trams and trains, but station lifts are sometimes out of order |
| Hotel | Ask for a cot ("Babybett"), a lift and a quiet room before booking |
| Nappies, formula | dm and Rossmann drugstores, "Apotheke" pharmacies |
| Emergencies | 112 for an emergency, 116 117 for an on-call doctor outside emergencies |
Stroller and transport
A light, foldable stroller is handier than a heavy one: some pavements are cobbled, and stations without lifts mean carrying. See Berlin transport for lines and zones, and BER airport for your arrival. If you rent a car, book a car seat suited to the age, as the law requires: see car rental at BER airport.
Where to stay
Choose a hotel or flat with a lift, a kitchen or kettle and a cot. Quiet districts, such as Charlottenburg or Prenzlauer Berg, work well. Our advice by profile is in where to stay in Berlin with family.
Hotel pick: Holiday Inn Berlin City Center East Prenzlauer Berg (Booking listing read 3 November 2026): in Prenzlauer Berg; Booking lists family rooms among its facilities, plus private parking. Limit: the room list shows no room labelled family, so confirm the bed set-up and the cot with the hotel.
Hotel pick: MEININGER Hotel Berlin Tiergarten (Booking listing read 3 November 2026): Booking says cots are offered depending on the option chosen and subject to availability. Limit: choose the option with the cot carefully, and note that the Hauptbahnhof hotel of the same chain lists no cots.
Outings with a baby
Parks, like the Tiergarten, offer shade and playgrounds: see Berlin's parks. Several museums welcome families: see museums for children. Department stores and malls often have a room to change and nurse a baby; for more ideas, see Berlin with kids.
Health and emergencies
In an emergency, call 112. A university hospital such as the Charité treats children in its paediatric emergency department. For procedures and insurance, read health and emergencies in Berlin. This guide does not replace a doctor's advice: consult your child's paediatrician before travelling with a very young baby.
