Choose according to what you will do

Our guide to Berlin with children lists the outings; your accommodation should bring them closer. Three profiles come up:

  • Zoo, aquarium and Kurfürstendamm: stay in Charlottenburg.
  • Museums, Futurium, Legoland, Technikmuseum: Mitte, Potsdamer Platz or Kreuzberg.
  • Parks, children's farm, neighbourhood feel: Prenzlauer Berg or Friedrichshain.

Prenzlauer Berg: the family neighbourhood

Husemannstraße and its restored buildings in Prenzlauer Berg

Prenzlauer Berg is calm and safe, with leafy squares, cafés and many apartments. Mauerpark is close by, with its Sunday flea market. The U2 and trams M1 and M10 reach the centre in 15 to 20 minutes. Drawback: few large hotels, so more private rentals.

From BER: no direct link; RB24 or RB32 to Ostkreuz, then the circular S-Bahn. With luggage and children, expect one change.

Charlottenburg: near the zoo

Savignyplatz, in the heart of Charlottenburg

Around Zoologischer Garten station, Charlottenburg puts families within walking distance of the Berlin Zoo and its aquarium, with the Tiergarten and Charlottenburg Palace nearby. There are classic hotels and guesthouses. The Museum Island is 20 to 30 minutes away by transport.

Potsdamer Platz: central, good for short stays

Potsdamer Platz has chain hotels, the LEGOLAND Discovery Centre and the Spy Museum. The FEX reaches BER in about 19 minutes: useful with young children tired from travelling. In the evening the area is quiet but not lively; the Tiergarten is next door for a walk.

Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain: better with older kids

Kreuzberg has the Technikmuseum and a free children's farm in Görlitzer Park; Friedrichshain has the Volkspark. With young children, choose residential streets (Bergmannkiez, Boxhagener Platz): weekend noise is real around Kottbusser Tor and Warschauer Straße.

Family room, apartment or two rooms?

  • Family room: handy for a short stay. Check the real number of beds and whether breakfast is included.
  • Apartment: kitchen and washing machine are useful for a week. A short-term rental listing must display a registration number issued by the district.
  • Two rooms: a solution with teenagers, if the budget allows.
  • Floor and lift: many old buildings have stairs only. With a pushchair, ask whether there is a lift.
  • Courtyard room (Hinterhof): often quieter for children who go to bed early.

Transport with children

Children under 6 travel free, and pushchairs are carried at no extra charge. From 6 to 14 the reduced fare applies; the standard 24-hour ticket includes up to three children in that age range (see getting around Berlin and the Berlin WelcomeCard). Fares as of October 2026. The state museums are free up to age 18.

Checklist before booking
