Which cruise to choose

Format Duration Price seen Best for
Classic Spree cruise 1 hour from about €19 to €23 First stay, short on time
Longer cruise, with Landwehrkanal or the eastern stretch 2 to 3 hours from about €25 to €36 Seeing more, a calmer boat
Evening cruise, solar boat or dinner 2.5 hours from about €36 (dinner from about €80) Sunset, a night out as a couple

The main operators are Stern und Kreisschiffahrt (a large fleet, trips from 1 to over 4 hours, from €20.50 to €59.50 depending on the cruise), small companies such as Reederei Bruno Winkler, and operators of electric or solar boats. The easiest way is to compare on a booking platform; the ticket is valid for the date and time you booked.

The one-hour trip: what you see

The one-hour format is the best seller. Leaving from the Friedrichstraße landing stage, Reichstagufer 18, in front of the Tränenpalast, the boat passes:

  • the government district: the Federal Chancellery and the Reichstag;
  • the House of World Cultures (Haus der Kulturen der Welt) and the central station;
  • the Berlin Cathedral and the Humboldt Forum, alongside Museum Island;
  • the Nikolaiviertel, the oldest rebuilt quarter of Berlin.

The commentary is in German and English, through audio. The boats have an open deck and a covered saloon, so the trip runs even when it rains. Children aged 6 to 14 pay a reduced fare. Note for visitors with reduced mobility: boarding is by stairs and some boats are not suitable.

Where to board

  • Friedrichstraße / Reichstagufer: the most central, next to Friedrichstraße station (S-Bahn and U6).
  • Nikolaiviertel and Historischer Hafen: east of Museum Island, handy if you are visiting Mitte.
  • Hauptbahnhof (central station): depending on the company, a few departures nearby, useful if you arrive by train.
  • Treptower Park: the large pier in the south-east, for cruises that pass the Oberbaumbrücke and the Molecule Man sculpture; the neighbouring park is described in our Treptower Park page.

Pick the departure point to suit your day rather than the price: the difference is small, and boats do not wait.

1 hour or more: how to decide

The Spree, the cathedral and the TV tower

Choose 1 hour if you have a single afternoon or are travelling with young children. The trip runs past the main landmarks without dragging.

Take 2 to 3 hours if you want to leave the centre: the long circuits go as far as the Oberbaumbrücke, the East Side Gallery seen from the river, or turn into the Landwehrkanal, quiet and lined with trees. Landwehrkanal trips are not offered by every operator: check the route before booking.

Solar and electric boats are quieter, and the evening trip around sunset is the most photogenic: our photo spots in Berlin give more ideas for the end of the day.

Practical tips

  • Booking: in summer and at weekends, late-afternoon departures fill up quickly. Booking online the day before avoids missing the boat.
  • Where to sit: the open deck is best for photos, but it gets cold quickly outside summer. Bring a jacket, even in May or September.
  • Drinks and meals: they are not included in the ticket; the bar on board is often expensive.
  • Weather: there is a covered saloon, but the view is not as good. For rainy days, see our guide Berlin: what to do when it rains.
  • Season: the offer is widest from April to October. In winter, timetables are reduced and some circuits stop: check before you come.

Other ways to see the Spree

If you prefer to stay on land, several riverbanks make a free walk: the Spreeufer in front of the cathedral, the bank of the government district or the East Side Gallery promenade. For a complete visit without a boat, see our guides what to do in Berlin in 1 day and Berlin: free activities.
