Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom): visit, dome walk and tickets

Updated on October 1, 2026

Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom), Am Lustgarten on Museum Island, is the largest Protestant church in Germany. This Neo-Renaissance building by the architect Julius Carl Raschdorff, consecrated on 27 February 1905, is recognisable by its four towers and its green dome topped by a golden cross, almost 100 metres high. The ticket (€15) covers the church, the Hohenzollern Crypt, reopened on 1 March 2026, the cathedral museum and the dome walkway, 50 metres up. Despite its name, it has never been a bishop's seat: the title of "Dom" goes back to the collegiate church founded in 1465 in the neighbouring palace. The cathedral is open Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 18:00 and on Sunday from 12:00 to 18:00, last admission at 17:00. Allow about an hour and a half with the audio guide, included in the ticket.

Highlights

The façade on the Lustgarten

The façade on the Lustgarten

From the Lustgarten lawn you take in the whole façade: the great portal, the four corner towers and the dome. Opposite, across the garden, stands the colonnade of the Altes Museum.

Under the dome, the Sermon Church (Predigtkirche) is decorated with mosaics and stained glass designed by Anton von Werner. Wilhelm Sauer's great organ, inaugurated in 1905 with 7,269 pipes and 113 stops, was then the largest in Germany; today it is the largest late-Romantic organ still preserved in its original state.

The dome walkway

After almost 300 steps, the outdoor walkway circles the dome 50 metres up, with no glass, behind a wide parapet. The view takes in Museum Island, the Humboldt Forum, the Red Town Hall, the synagogue on Oranienburger Straße and the TV Tower. Up close, you can see the eight bronze angels with musical instruments that adorn the dome.

The Hohenzollern Crypt

Beneath the church, the crypt holds 91 burials of the Hohenzollern family, from the late 16th century to the early 20th century, including those of the Great Elector, King Frederick I and Queen Sophie Charlotte. It reopened on 1 March 2026 after six years of works, with a new information area and its interactive model; the crypt and the church are now wheelchair accessible.

The Imperial Staircase and the museum

The ticket also includes the Imperial Staircase (Kaiserliches Treppenhaus), the cathedral museum (Dommuseum) and the Baptism and Wedding Church (Tauf- und Traukirche), smaller than the main church.

Tickets

Full price €15, concessions €12 (school pupils, students, apprentices, disabled visitors), €11 with the Berlin WelcomeCard.
