Futurium Berlin: the free museum of the future, opening hours and visit

Updated on October 1, 2026

The Futurium, on the Spree 350 metres from Berlin Central Station (Hauptbahnhof), is a "house of futures" opened on 5 September 2019 on the initiative of the German federal government and scientific institutions. Rather than a collection, it offers an interactive exhibition built around one simple question: what kind of world do we want to live in tomorrow? You explore it through three "thinking spaces" (people, nature, technology), then in a hands-on laboratory, and finally on a roof covered with solar panels. Admission is free, with no booking needed for individual visitors. The museum is open every day except Tuesday, with late opening on Thursday until 20:00. Allow 2 hours for your visit, more with children.

Highlights

The building

The building

Designed by the Berlin architects Richter Musikowski, the glass and metal building was built between March 2015 and 2019. Its facade is made of more than 8,000 one-metre elements of printed cast glass and folded metal reflectors, which change appearance with the light. Two huge 28-metre-wide picture windows open the exhibition floor to the north and south, and the ground floor serves as an open passage between the two squares.

The permanent exhibition

Upstairs, across some 3,000 m², three "thinking spaces" devoted to people, nature and technology present scenarios for the future, from humanoid robots to cities in space, by way of free time, justice and our relationship with nature. The exhibition starts from visitors' questions, such as "When will my smartphone fall in love with me?" or "Will my electricity come from the moon?".

The Futurium Lab

In the basement, this 600 m² laboratory with a 6-metre ceiling, dark concrete and black asphalt floor is made for touching, taking part and experimenting with objects that will shape the future; workshops are held here. It is the favourite stop for children and teenagers.

On/Off-Beziehung

Since 11 September 2026, the theme "On/Off-Beziehung" ("on/off relationship") explores our life with technology: chatbots, wearables, robots, artificial intelligence. You can test your ability to spot a deepfake (a manipulated image, video or sound) or discover clothes that react to stress.

The Skywalk

The Skywalk

The sloping roof, almost entirely covered with photovoltaic and solar thermal collectors that power the building, is ringed by a public walkway reached on foot or by lift. From it you can see the bend of the Spree, the Federal Chancellery and the Central Station. It only opens in good weather and may be closed because of the weather.
