The short answer

If you are torn between two options: choose Mitte to be within walking distance of the monuments, or Potsdamer Platz for a chain hotel, fast airport access and a central position. Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain suit you if nightlife matters as much as sightseeing; Charlottenburg and Prenzlauer Berg if you prefer quiet.

What matters on a first trip

  • Daily journeys: over a three-day stay, ten minutes less per trip adds up to more than an hour saved. Look for a U-Bahn or S-Bahn station within 10 minutes' walk of your accommodation.
  • Evening rhythm: if you come back late, avoid bar streets (Warschauer Straße, Oranienstraße) or ask for a courtyard room.
  • The first arrival: with luggage, a direct link from BER (S9 or FEX) beats a change of trains. Details in our guide to Berlin BER airport.

Mitte: the simplest choice

The Bode Museum at the end of the Am Kupfergraben quay, in Mitte

Mitte brings together Museum Island, the Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden and Alexanderplatz. On a first visit it is the neighbourhood where you walk the most and use transport the least. The Spandauer Vorstadt area, between Hackescher Markt and Auguststraße, mixes hotels, restaurants and lively courtyards. The trade-off: prices are among the highest in the city, and the streets near Alexanderplatz are very touristy.

From BER: the S9 runs directly to Alexanderplatz, Hackescher Markt and Friedrichstraße.

Potsdamer Platz: central and well connected

Between Mitte, the Tiergarten and Kreuzberg, Potsdamer Platz offers large hotels, the Philharmonie and the Kulturforum museums on foot. The FEX connects BER to Potsdamer Platz in about 19 minutes, every 15 minutes: the most practical option for a late arrival or a short stay. The area is a little impersonal in the evening, but Kreuzberg and Mitte are a few stops away.

Charlottenburg: elegant and quiet

Savignyplatz, in the heart of Charlottenburg

Around Zoologischer Garten station, the Kurfürstendamm and Savignyplatz, Charlottenburg suits travellers who like classic restaurants, shops and hotels with character. The zoo is next door. Museum Island and Kreuzberg are 20 to 30 minutes away: acceptable if you do not plan to go back to the hotel mid-day.

Prenzlauer Berg: for a more relaxed stay

Prenzlauer Berg is a neighbourhood of old buildings, cafés and parks, safe and quiet. It is 15 to 20 minutes from the main sights by the U2 or trams M1 and M10. Choose it if you stay four days or more, or if you want neighbourhood Berlin rather than monument Berlin. There is no direct link from BER: take the RB24 or RB32 to Ostkreuz, then the circular S-Bahn.

When to prefer Kreuzberg or Friedrichshain

If you come mainly for bars, markets, the East Side Gallery and clubs, Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain make sense and are often cheaper than Mitte. Weekend noise is the main drawback: pick residential streets (Bergmannkiez, Boxhagener Platz) rather than the surroundings of Kottbusser Tor or Warschauer Straße.

Quick choice table

Your profile Recommended area Link with BER
2 days, museums and monuments Mitte Direct S9
Late arrival, short stay Potsdamer Platz Direct FEX
Quiet, shopping, zoo Charlottenburg Direct S9 (long ride)
4 days or more, neighbourhood feel Prenzlauer Berg RB24 or RB32, then S-Bahn
Bars, markets, nightlife Kreuzberg or Friedrichshain S9 (Friedrichshain), X7 then U7 (Kreuzberg)

Mistakes to avoid

  • Trusting the neighbourhood name: a listing "near Alexanderplatz" can be a 15-minute walk away. Measure the distance to the nearest station.
  • Forgetting the ticket: from BER you need an ABC ticket at €5; within the city the AB ticket at €4 is enough (fares as of October 2026). See getting around Berlin.
  • Forgetting the City Tax: 7.5% of the net price per night since 1 January 2025, explained in where to stay in Berlin.
  • Booking an event too late: during the Berlinale in February, the marathon in September or major trade fairs, hotels fill up.
  • Renting without a registration number: a short-term rental must display a number issued by the district.
