Grunewaldturm Berlin: the Havel viewing tower, prices, hours and access

Updated on October 25, 2026

The Grunewaldturm is a 55-metre brick tower on the Havel, in the Grunewald forest in west Berlin. You climb 204 steps, with no lift, to a platform at 36 metres with a view over the Havel, the Wannsee and the forest. Entry costs about €3 to €4.50 for an adult, €1.50 for a child aged 6 to 14, and under-6s pay nothing (prices seen on online sources in 2026, with differences; check on site). At the foot of the tower, the Kaisergarten restaurant and beer garden (Havelchaussee 61) make a good stop after the walk. Opening hours could not be confirmed by a reliable source: check before you go, especially outside spring and autumn.

Highlights

The tower

The tower

Built in the late 19th century in honour of Emperor Wilhelm I, it is 55 metres tall and overlooks the bank of the Havel; the viewing platform is at 36 metres.

The 204 steps

You climb on foot, with no lift: it is not wheelchair accessible and takes a minimum of fitness.

The view over the Havel and the Wannsee

On a clear day you see sailing boats on the Havel, the Wannsee and the Grunewald forests; it is one of the best viewpoints in west Berlin.

The Kaisergarten

Restaurant and beer garden at the foot of the tower: a good place for lunch on the terrace in summer.

Practical info

Tips

  • The way there is best by bike or on foot: the Havelradweg runs past the tower, and a walk in the Grunewald forest (see Grunewald forest) fills half a day. To compare with other, more central paid viewpoints, see our guide to Berlin viewpoints. Combine with the Wannsee or the Wannsee beach for a day by the water. Few shops nearby: bring water.

How to get there

Havelchaussee, 14193 Berlin (Grunewald). From the centre: S-Bahn to Heerstraße or U2 to Theodor-Heuss-Platz, then bus 218 to the Grunewaldturm stop (check on the BVG site for works). By bike, along the Havelradweg.

Opening hours

Best: April to October, in fine weather
Depending on the season (to confirm before the visit; mostly April to October)
