Berlin Botanical Garden: the great greenhouses of Dahlem, tickets and opening hours
The Botanischer Garten in Berlin, in Dahlem, covers about 43 hectares and holds nearly 20,000 plant species: it is one of the largest botanical gardens in the world. Laid out between 1897 and 1910 under Adolf Engler, on the idea of "the world in one garden", it is organised by geographical region, with 15 display greenhouses included in the ticket. Admission is €10 (€5 reduced), free up to age 14. People come for the tropical greenhouses, an Italian garden, hills of alpine plants and wide lawns, above all in spring and autumn.
Highlights

The Großes Tropenhaus
Built in 1907 and renovated in 2009, it is the largest of the greenhouses: a glass pavilion about 25 m high sheltering a tropical forest of palms, giant bamboo and lianas, in humid heat. Allow a good half hour here.

The themed greenhouses
The garden has 15 display greenhouses; among them the Victoriahaus (orchids, carnivorous plants and the giant water lily Victoria amazonica), whose upper floor is currently closed for repairs. The greenhouses close an hour before the garden.

The open-air gardens
The Italian garden and flower beds, the hills of mountain plants and the wide lawns are best explored on foot, along shaded paths. A coffee truck sets up on the terrace Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00 during the 2026 season.

Tips
The Botanisches Museum is closed for modernisation until about 2027. Bring walking shoes and water in summer: the garden is large, so allow 2 to 3 hours. The garden closes at 16:00 on 25, 26 and 31 December and is closed on 24 December; from 18 November to 10 January, the Christmas Garden (illuminated evenings) changes the daytime hours (closing at 16:00). Prices checked in October 2026: an evening ticket at €5 is offered after 17:00.
How to get there
S-Bahn S1 to Botanischer Garten station, or U3 to Dahlem-Dorf then bus X83; from U9/S1 Rathaus Steglitz, bus X83 or M48. No parking in front of the garden entrance (Königin-Luise-Straße 6-8). The garden is close to the Allied Museum and the Brücke-Museum; our guide to Dahlem and Grunewald offers a full day. For other gardens, see the best parks and gardens in Berlin.
