Berlin's cherry blossom

The cherry avenue on the Mauerweg, between Lichterfelde and Teltow

Flowering generally starts around mid-April and lasts about three weeks, depending on when the cold gives way. Here are the best places:

  • The TV-Asahi cherry avenue, on the Mauerweg between Lichterfelde and Teltow: more than a thousand trees along the old course of the Wall, presented as the longest Japanese cherry avenue in Berlin and Brandenburg. The path is accessible again in 2026 after renovation work.
  • The Gardens of the World in Marzahn, where the Japanese, Chinese and Korean gardens host the cherry blossom festival (Kirschblütenfest): in 2026, on 11 and 12 April, from 10am to 6pm, with performances, street food and cosplay (reduced admission for visitors dressed as manga characters).
  • The city streets: cherry trees also bloom in town, for example in Friedrichshain, near the Oberbaumbrücke. For the rest of the route, see our guide to Friedrichshain.
  • The Japanmarkt, at the Festsaal Kreuzberg: in 2026, on 3 May, a celebration of Japanese culture around hanami.

History and walks outdoors

Spring is the right season to walk along the old course of the Wall: the Berlin Wall Memorial, on Bernauer Straße, is largely visited outdoors, and our guide to following the Berlin Wall offers a complete route. The Mauerweg, which follows the border around former West Berlin, can also be walked or cycled; this is where the TV-Asahi cherry avenue lies.

Tips for a spring trip

  • Clothing. In March and early April the days are cool and changeable: bring a windbreaker and layers.
  • Blossom. It depends on the weather; if you are coming specially, check local forecasts and the Gardens of the World website.
  • Terraces and beer gardens. They open with the first fine days: book for the weekend.
  • Museums. If the weather turns rainy, see our guide to what to do in Berlin when it rains.
  • Planning. A spring weekend works well with our guide to a weekend in Berlin.
