Tierpark Berlin: the big Friedrichsfelde zoo, tickets, hours and tips
The Tierpark in Friedrichsfelde, opened in 1955 in the east of the city, is one of the largest landscaped zoos in Europe: a wooded park of some 160 hectares where you walk a lot between the enclosures of elephants, big cats, Himalayan animals and the little Friedrichsfelde palace. It is Berlin's "second zoo", quieter and more spacious than the Berlin Zoo in the centre-west, and run by the same management. Plan at least half a day, ideally a full day with a picnic, and wear good shoes.
Highlights

The main entrance
Beside the Tierpark metro station, the main entrance (Am Tierpark 125) opens onto wide paths leading to the different areas of the park. There are other entrances, notably near the Bärenschaufenster; the map handed out at the gate helps you avoid detours.

The elephants
They are among the Tierpark's most emblematic animals, with large outdoor areas.
Big cats and the Alfred Brehm house
Tigers, lions and other big cats are one of the park's attractions, around the famous Alfred-Brehm-Haus.
The Himalayas and open spaces
The "Himalaya-Gebirgswelt" area shows mountain animals of Central Asia on landscaped slopes, a far cry from the classic zoo.
Friedrichsfelde Palace
This small Baroque palace stands in the middle of the park, in an English-style garden.

Tips
Admission (October 2026): adults aged 16 and over from €14.50 online and €22.50 at the ticket office; children aged 4 to 15 from €7 online and €11 at the ticket office; free for children under 4 (free ticket to be booked online). The online ticket is cheaper than at the gate and saves you the queue. The price includes a voluntary €0.50 contribution to species conservation. The annual pass for the Tierpark alone costs €69; a combined Tierpark, zoo and aquarium pass costs €119. Dogs on a lead are allowed. Pushchairs can be rented for €5 plus a deposit. The park is huge: you will walk several kilometres, and the paths are sometimes steep. For a full tour of the east of the city, add the Karlshorst museum or the Hohenschönhausen memorial. The Lichtenberg guide covers the surroundings, and Berlin with children has more ideas for families.
