Liebermann Villa: the painter's house and garden on the Wannsee

Updated on October 5, 2026

The Liebermann-Villa am Wannsee is the former summer home of the Impressionist painter Max Liebermann (1847-1935), one of Berlin's most prominent artists in the early 20th century. The museum shows works by Liebermann and temporary exhibitions, in a villa surrounded by its garden, restored after the paintings the artist made of it. Admission is €12 (€6 reduced), free for under-18s. Allow one to two hours, more with a break at the café. The villa was built in 1909-1910 on the shore of the Großer Wannsee. Liebermann spent his summers here and painted dozens of canvases of the garden.

Highlights

The villa

The villa

A neoclassical-style house with green shutters and an ochre façade, opening on the lake side onto a terrace and a large garden. Today it is a museum devoted to Liebermann and his time.

The garden

The garden is a listed monument and has been replanted after Liebermann's paintings: flower beds, a birch avenue, a lawn running down to the lake. Many of his best-known garden paintings were made here.

Café Max

Set on the terrace and in the family's former dining room, it serves coffee and cakes. An admission ticket is required to enter.

Temporary exhibitions

In autumn 2026, the exhibition "Auf zu neuen Werken!" brings together Max Slevogt, the art dealer Bruno Cassirer and Max Liebermann. The programme changes several times a year.
