The price depends on the date you pick: the low end applies to quiet evenings, the high end to peak ones. Family Day (€42.90, up to five people) applies only on 18 November, 25 November, 1 December, 8 December and 6 January. Students and seniors (65+, Monday to Thursday only, not between 18 December and 2 January) pay the child rate and must show ID at the gate.
Which ticket to buy
- A couple or friends on a weekday: a dated adult ticket on a Monday to Thursday evening, the cheapest and quietest slot.
- A family with young children: the Family Day if your dates match, otherwise the Family ticket; children under 6 enter free.
- Flexible plans or bad weather forecast: the FlexTicket (€32.90 adult), valid on any opening day. Tickets cannot be returned, even for rain.
- Combined with the Tierpark: the Winter Magic ticket (€49.90 adult, €43.90 child) covers Christmas Garden and the Tierpark Christmas event; it is not valid from 18 December to 2 January and the quota is limited.
How to get there
There are two entrances in Dahlem: Königin-Luise-Straße 6-8 (14195 Berlin) and Unter den Eichen 5-10 (12203 Berlin). For the first, take bus 101 or X83 to Königin-Luise-Platz / Botanischer Garten. For the second, take the S1 to Botanischer Garten station or bus M48 to Unter den Eichen / Botanischer Garten. There is no parking near the garden: use public transport. Your ticket does not tie you to one entrance, but wheelchair loans must be requested by email in advance, naming the entrance.
Before you go
- Allow about two hours for the 2 km route; the last start on the trail is 7:45 pm (8:45 pm on Friday, Saturday and during the holiday period).
- Dogs are not allowed, except registered assistance dogs.
- Food and drink: stands along the route have vegetarian and vegan options. You may bring non-alcoholic drinks in PET bottles or cartons up to 1.5 litres, but no other food.
- Accessibility: the paths are low-barrier for wheelchairs and strollers, although the natural terrain can be a challenge. Accessible toilets are on site.
- Weather: dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes. Umbrellas and ponchos are sold at the box office.
- Typical mistake: arriving at the gate on a Friday or Saturday evening without a ticket and paying the box-office price.
Make an evening of it
The garden alone does not fill a whole day. Pair it with an afternoon in the Dahlem museums (see Dahlem and Grunewald) or the daytime visit of the Botanical Garden, which closes early while the event is on. If you would rather see the city centre's lights, the Christmas markets of Berlin and our guide to Christmas in Berlin cover the other side of December. Christmas Garden is not a market, so a guided walk through the real markets is a good complement: see the Berlin Christmas Markets Tour (about 2 hours on foot, mulled wine included, details in our comparison). For a stay in the city, see hotels for a Christmas weekend.
