Crowds and Prices in September

Berlin's summer holidays are over: regional families have left the lakes and parks, but trade fairs and big events fill the hotels. The marathon weekend and the IFA week (the consumer electronics show, 4 to 8 September in 2026) are the busiest; book early and compare prices before fixing your dates. BMW Berlin Marathon: Sunday 26 September 2027

The Berlin Marathon, one of the six World Marathon Majors, known for its flat, fast course, takes place in 2027 on Sunday 26 September (in 2026: 27 September). The start and finish are near the Brandenburg Gate, and the route crosses several neighbourhoods: streets are closed for part of the day, so plan your trips by S-Bahn and U-Bahn, see transport in Berlin. Most runners get a place through a lottery a year ahead: check the race's official website.

Berlin Art Week

Open Monument Day

On the weekend of 12 and 13 September 2026, Tag des offenen Denkmals opened buildings and sites usually closed to the public free of charge, under the theme "NetzWERKE – Denkmale & Infrastruktur". The 2027 dates are published by Berlin's Landesdenkmalamt.

Literature Festival, Musikfest and IFA

The Internationales Literaturfestival Berlin ran from 3 to 16 September 2026; the Musikfest Berlin, around the Philharmonie, from 28 August to 23 September 2026. The IFA, the big consumer electronics show, took place from 4 to 8 September 2026 at the exhibition grounds: it pushes up accommodation prices.

What to Wear in September

• Layers: a sweater or jacket for morning and evening, a T-shirt for the afternoon.
• A thin waterproof jacket: showers are less frequent than in summer but possible.
