Bikini Berlin: opening hours, roof terrace and shops of the concept mall
Bikini Berlin is a "concept" shopping centre in the Bikinihaus, a listed 1950s complex facing the zoo and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in the City West. Thoroughly renovated and reopened in 2014, it brings together, on about 17,000 m² and three levels, some sixty fashion and design boutiques without the usual big chains, restaurants and a large roof terrace overlooking the zoo. Entry is free, and it is an easy hour's stop between two visits in the City West.
Highlights

The Bikinihaus and its history
The building is the work of architect Paul Schwebes, in the modernist tradition of 1950s West Berlin. Its name comes from the long horizontal opening between its two volumes, which looks like a bikini in plan. The complex is a listed monument and was restored before the shopping centre opened.

The Budapester Straße façade
The name in big dark beads marks the main entrance. Across the street, the zoo and the Memorial Church are a few minutes' walk away.
The pop-up boxes
Instead of classic shops, the centre rents wooden modules, the "pop-up boxes", to designers and brands for short periods: clothes, jewellery, accessories and design objects that change regularly. This is what earns it the concept mall label.
The panorama window onto the monkeys
On the ground floor, a large window looks onto the monkey enclosure of the Berlin Zoo: you can watch the animals from the shopping centre without a zoo ticket.
The roof terrace
This 7,000 m² terrace overlooks the Zoologischer Garten and its animals, with the Upper West tower and the roofs of the City West in the background. It is one of the nicest places in west Berlin to take a break in the sun.
Eating and drinking
The centre has restaurants, cafés and international food counters, and the building also houses the 25hours hotel. For a big food hall, KaDeWe is about 20 minutes' walk or two U-Bahn stops away.
Opening hours and prices
Free entry. Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 8pm, closed on Sundays. Restaurants sometimes keep different hours, and the terrace may close in bad weather: check the centre's website before you go.
