Bode-Museum Berlin: Sculpture, Coins and a Visit to the Tip of Museum Island
The Bode-Museum, on Am Kupfergraben at the northern tip of Museum Island, houses the sculpture collection, the Museum of Byzantine Art, a coin cabinet of around half a million objects and Old Master paintings. The domed neo-baroque building opened in 1904; since 1956 it has borne the name of its first director, Wilhelm von Bode. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm; a ticket costs €14, free for under-18s. Allow about two hours for your visit.
Highlights

The building and its dome
Set on the prow of the island between two arms of the Spree, the Bode-Museum can be seen from afar, notably from the Monbijou Bridge, which is where you enter.
Sculpture
The collection runs from the early Christian era to the 18th century: Donatello's Pazzi Madonna (marble, around 1420) and works by Tilman Riemenschneider are among the best-known pieces.
The Tiepolo Gallery
It shows the frescoes that Giovanni Battista Tiepolo painted in 1759 for a Venetian villa, 22 of them according to the museum.
The Museum of Byzantine Art
Its collections cover the 3rd to the 15th century: icons, ivories, mosaics and liturgical objects.
The coin cabinet
One of the largest numismatic collections in Europe, with around half a million coins, medals and banknotes, from antiquity to the present day.
Opening hours and prices

Tips
The Bode-Museum is often quieter than the Neues Museum at the other end of the island: it is a good option late in the day, but remember it closes at 5pm on weekdays. Buy your ticket online (prices checked in October 2026). See our page on Museum Island for all the museums at a glance; it is another indoor visit for a rainy day.
