Pergamon Museum Berlin: Closure, Reopening on 4 June 2027 and Alternatives
The Pergamon Museum on Museum Island is closed for renovation: the building has been under works since 2013 and has been fully closed since 2023. According to the Berlin State Museums (SMB), it is due to reopen in part on 4 June 2027, with the Pergamon Altar, the Hall of Hellenistic Architecture and the Museum of Islamic Art. In the meantime you can see works from Pergamon and a giant panorama of the ancient city in the neighbouring building, "Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama". This page explains what is open today, what will reopen and what to visit instead.
Highlights

The building under renovation
The Pergamon Museum fills the south-west side of the island, between the Neues Museum and the Kupfergraben canal. It cannot be visited before it reopens, but you can see it well from the riverbank and from the James-Simon-Galerie.
Pergamonmuseum. Das Panorama
This exhibition building, Am Kupfergraben 2, shows important objects from Pergamon and the monumental panorama by the artist Yadegar Asisi. The ticket costs €12 and is included in the Museumsinsel ticket (checked in October 2026); book at shop.smb.museum.
What reopens on 4 June 2027
The north wing and the central building, with the Pergamon Altar and the Hall of Hellenistic Architecture, as well as the completely redesigned Museum of Islamic Art, where you will find the Aleppo Room and the Mshatta Facade.
What stays closed
The south wing, home to the Museum of the Ancient Near East, stays closed; a full reopening is announced for around 2037. In the meantime the museum will offer a temporary presentation of its collections.
Tickets for the reopening
According to the SMB, individual tickets for the main building should go on sale around December 2026; group visits can already be booked for dates from 8 June 2027. Prices have not been published yet: do not trust third-party sites that quote them.
What to visit instead
Greek and Roman antiquities are at the Altes Museum, ancient Egypt and Nefertiti at the Neues Museum, Byzantine art at the Bode-Museum.

Tips
If you are coming for the Pergamon Altar, wait until June 2027: the Panorama shows works from Pergamon but does not replace the altar. The Museumsinsel ticket covers the Panorama and the other museums on the island; compare it with the Museumspass Berlin, which does not include the Panorama. Tickets are bought online, and once the museum reopens the entrance to the main building will be through the James-Simon-Galerie. For an overview of the museums, see our page on Museum Island.
