Karneval der Kulturen: Kreuzberg's multicultural carnival, dates and tips
The Karneval der Kulturen, the "Carnival of Cultures", is Berlin's great celebration of diversity. Every year at Pentecost, for four days, Kreuzberg fills with music, dance and food from around the world, with a big parade on Sunday: more than 5,000 participants and some sixty groups, from Brazilian samba to Chinese lion dances and West African drums. The festival is free and draws about 500,000 people. It has been held since the mid-1990s. The 2027 date had not yet been confirmed by the city in early October 2026: Pentecost falls on Sunday 16 May 2027, so the weekend will probably run from Friday 14 to Monday 17 May. Check the official site before you book. To place the festival in the year, see the calendar of festivals and events.
Highlights

The Sunday parade
This is the highlight: costumed groups from almost every continent, with floats, brass bands, drums and dancers. Arrive early to get a place along the route, because the crowd is dense. The route is published by the organisers each year; it has varied between editions, so check it before you go.
The Blücherplatz street festival
Around Blücherplatz in Kreuzberg, music stages and dozens of food stalls from around the world stay open all weekend. It is the best place to eat cheaply without a reservation and to hear local bands. To continue your walk in the district, see our guide to Kreuzberg and the Markthalle Neun.
The groups and costumes
The groups prepare their costumes for months, often with the city's communities. The carnival showcases Berlin's multicultural population rather than a polished street show: approach it as a giant neighbourhood party.

Tips
Entry is free, but food and drink stalls charge, and some take cards poorly: bring a little cash. The crowd is huge on Sunday: keep an eye on your phone and wallet, as in any crowd (see our advice on scams to avoid in Berlin). Avoid the car: streets are closed and transport is busy; the simplest way is the U-Bahn or S-Bahn with an AB ticket (see getting around Berlin). Bikes are hard to park. If you are looking for a hotel, book early: Pentecost is a long public-holiday weekend in Germany. The festival takes place outdoors, rain or shine; bring a light jacket and water. Stage times and the programme are on the carnival's official website, published a few weeks before the event.
How to get there
The street festival is on Blücherplatz in Kreuzberg, near Hallesches Tor; get off at the Hallesches Tor U-Bahn station (U1, U3) or Gneisenaustraße (U7), then walk a few minutes. For the parade, get off at the station closest to that year's route.
