Marheineke Markthalle: Bergmannkiez's Food Hall in Kreuzberg

Updated on October 5, 2026

The Marheineke Markthalle is a covered market hall that opened in 1892 in the heart of the Bergmannkiez, in Kreuzberg. It is one of Berlin's nineteenth-century municipal market halls, alongside the Markthalle Neun and the Arminiusmarkthalle in Moabit. Across 2,500 m², it brings together stalls selling meat, cheese, bread, fish, fruit, vegetables and flowers, some of it organic and regional, with Italian, Greek, Spanish and Arabic specialities, cafés and counters where you can eat on the spot. It is open Monday to Saturday.

Highlights

Inside the hall

Under a glass roof, the aisles group fresh-produce counters and food stalls. It is a neighbourhood market, used by Bergmannkiez residents as much as by visitors.

This elevation of the façade, drawn at the time of construction, shows a central block topped by a lantern, typical of the municipal halls of the period.

The stalls to try

The choice runs from butchers and cheese counters to Italian, Greek, Spanish, Asian, vegetarian and vegan food counters; an organic ice-cream parlour opens seasonally.

A neighbourhood hall

The hall also has a bookshop and services such as a shoemaker, tailor, locksmith and dry cleaner, plus art exhibitions that change regularly.

The Marheinekeplatz flea market

Every Saturday (10am-4pm) and Sunday (11am-5pm, 4pm in winter), a flea market takes over the square in front of the hall: antiques, clothes, bikes, books, records and designer pieces. Entry is free; food and plants are not sold there.

Practical info

Tips

The hall is closed on Sundays: that day, only the flea market on the square is open. Entry is free; you only pay for what you buy. You can combine it with the Markthalle Neun, which leans more towards street food, and our guide to Kreuzberg for the rest of the neighbourhood.
