Nikolaiviertel Berlin: the rebuilt medieval quarter on the Spree

Updated on October 5, 2026

The Nikolaiviertel is a small quarter of cobbled lanes, colourful houses and taverns around the Nikolaikirche, in the heart of Berlin's earliest settlement. Destroyed in the war, it was rebuilt in 1980-1987 by the GDR for the city's 750th anniversary, combining replicas of old houses with prefabricated blocks dressed in historicist façades. So it is not an authentically medieval quarter but a pleasant, very central setting, a few minutes from Alexanderplatz and Museum Island. Wandering the lanes is free; the main visit is the church-museum, and you can eat in traditional taverns.

Highlights

The Nikolaikirche

The Nikolaikirche

Founded around 1230, it is Berlin's oldest church. Badly damaged in 1945, it was rebuilt in the 1980s and now houses a museum on the history of the city and the church (Museum Nikolaikirche, run by the Stadtmuseum Berlin; €7, free for under-18s, prices checked in October 2026).

On the river side, the quarter is lined with terraces and a promenade where you can watch the boats on the Spree. It is a good place for a break before heading back to Museum Island.

The lanes and taverns

Several restaurants serve traditional Berlin cooking (Eisbein, Bouletten, beer): Zum Nußbaum, a tavern rebuilt after an old inn of old Berlin, is a well-known example. Prices are those of a tourist district: compare with the restaurants of Mitte.

The Ephraim-Palais

This 18th-century rococo palace, rebuilt near its original site, hosts exhibitions of the Stadtmuseum Berlin. Check the museum's website for opening hours and prices.
