An evening up high

The finest free panorama is from the dome of the Reichstag: you must register in advance on the Bundestag's website, and choose a slot close to sunset. For a paid view, the TV Tower overlooks the city; book an end-of-day slot online. Viktoriapark, on its Kreuzberg hill, offers a more intimate and free view.
By the water
The Oberbaum Bridge, with its brick towers, is a lovely place for a walk at dusk, between Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain. For a quieter day, take the S-Bahn to Wannsee, then the ferry to Peacock Island, with its paths and little white castle; in summer you can then swim at Wannsee beach.
Strolling through old Berlin
The Nikolaiviertel, a medieval quarter rebuilt beside the Spree, offers cobbled lanes and cafés. In the evening, the Gendarmenmarkt square is lit up, with its two cathedrals. In the Tiergarten, the paths and ponds suit a long walk.
A day in Potsdam
For a day out for two beyond the city, Sanssouci Palace and its park can be visited in a morning, before lunch in the old town. Find the details in Potsdam from Berlin or among our day trips from Berlin.
If the weather is bad
When it rains, bet on a museum, a concert at the Philharmonie or an evening in a bar: see our ideas for Berlin when it rains and for going out at night.
Practical tips
- Bookings: book the restaurant and the Reichstag dome in advance, especially at weekends.
- When to come: May to September for lakes and parks; in winter, the Christmas markets have their charm (see the best time to visit Berlin).
