New Palace in Potsdam (Neues Palais): visit, tickets and how to get there
The New Palace (Neues Palais) is the largest palace in Sanssouci Park in Potsdam. Frederick the Great had it built between 1763 and 1769, just after the Seven Years' War, to show that Prussia had come out of the conflict more powerful than ever. It closes off the western end of the park, opposite Sanssouci Palace, and takes one to two hours to visit. It is part of the Palaces and Parks of Potsdam, a UNESCO World Heritage Site managed by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation (SPSG). It closes on Tuesdays (Sanssouci Palace closes on Mondays): by alternating the two, you can visit a palace every day of the week. For the rest of your day in Potsdam, see our page on Sanssouci Palace and our guide to Potsdam from Berlin.
Highlights

The garden façade
With its central dome and its wings of pink brick and pale stone, the palace is best seen from the park, at the end of the main avenue. Opposite it, across the esplanade, the Communs, two buildings linked by a colonnade, now house the University of Potsdam.

The Grotto Hall (Grottensaal)
The walls and pillars of the great ground-floor reception hall are covered with shells, fossils and mineral stones. Its restoration has just been completed: the sparkle that Frederick intended can be seen again.
The Grand Tour
It takes in the festival halls and great galleries of the palace, including the Marble Hall, and the baroque theatre. The king's apartments, in the south-east wing, are currently closed for renovation work.
Prince Henry's apartment
A separate ticket (or the combined ticket) gives access to the apartment of Prince Heinrich, the king's younger brother.

Tips
Prices checked in October 2026: Grand Tour €14 (reduced €10); Prince Henry's apartment €8 (reduced €6); combined ticket €16 (reduced €14); sanssouci+ ticket €22 (reduced €17), valid for one day at all SPSG palaces open in Potsdam; sanssouci+ family ticket €49 for two adults and up to four children. As the number of tickets is limited each day, book in advance from the official SPSG ticket shop. From April to October you can visit on your own or with a guide; from November to March, only on a guided tour. For security reasons, luggage cannot be left at the entrance: a limited number of lockers up to 35 × 35 × 50 cm are available. Strollers are not allowed in the exhibition rooms. The free "SANSSOUCI" app offers a multimedia guide in 8 languages, with children's versions; as the Wi-Fi is patchy inside the palace, download the content before you arrive. The ground floor is partly wheelchair accessible by a ramp. Allow at least two hours, plus a half-hour walk across the park from Sanssouci Palace.
How to get there
Am Neuen Palais, 14469 Potsdam. From Berlin Hauptbahnhof, allow about thirty minutes on the RE1 regional train or the S7 S-Bahn to Potsdam; until 12 December 2026, because of works on the Stadtbahn, the RE1 starts from Berlin-Charlottenburg rather than Hauptbahnhof. The RE1 also stops at Potsdam Park Sanssouci station, close to the palace. From Potsdam Hauptbahnhof, bus 605 goes to the New Palace stop. Potsdam is in zone C: you need a Berlin ABC ticket (€5.00 single, valid for 120 minutes). Paid parking at P3 "Am Neuen Palais".
