Museum Barberini in Potsdam: Impressionist Masterpieces, Tickets and Opening Hours

Updated on October 5, 2026

Museum Barberini is Potsdam's leading art museum, housed on the Alter Markt in a reconstruction of the Baroque palace built in 1771-1772 for Frederick the Great and modelled on the Palazzo Barberini in Rome. The palace was destroyed in 1945, then rebuilt, and the museum opened in January 2017 at the initiative of the patron Hasso Plattner. It is best known for its Impressionist collection (Monet, Renoir, Sisley) and for its large temporary exhibitions, which change several times a year. It makes an excellent complement to a day at Sanssouci, about half an hour's walk away. Allow between an hour and a half and two hours for a visit. The museum is open every day except Tuesday, from 10am to 7pm.

Highlights

The rebuilt palace façade

At the corner of the Alter Markt and Humboldtstraße, the building recreates the 18th-century façades, inspired by a Roman palace. It faces the dome of the Nikolaikirche and the Landtag, the rebuilt Stadtschloss.

Works from the Hasso Plattner collection, including paintings by Claude Monet, form the heart of the permanent display. The hang changes: check the museum's website before you come if you are looking for a particular painting.

Temporary exhibitions

Temporary exhibitions

Several times a year the museum devotes a major exhibition to an artist or a movement, often linked to its collection. Dates and themes change every season and are not detailed here: check the programme online.
