Budget
On Museum Island, one museum costs €14 (€16 for the Alte Nationalgalerie) and the Museumsinsel ticket at €24 covers all the museums on the island for a day: it pays for itself from two museums. In Potsdam you need an ABC transport ticket: €5.00 one way (€5.20 from 1 January 2027) or €12.90 for 24 hours, useful for the buses between sites. Sanssouci Palace costs €14; the sanssouci+ ticket at €22 gives access to all the foundation's palaces open in Potsdam for one day and is worthwhile from two palaces. The park is free. Overall, expect to spend a little more in Potsdam if you visit two palaces, and a little less if you stay in the park and the old town.
Time and transport
Museum Island is in central Mitte: you get there by U5 (Museumsinsel station) or on foot, with no special ticket. Potsdam means two hours of travel there and back and getting around the town, since the sites are far apart; see our guide to Potsdam from Berlin and the one on transport in Berlin. For a short visit the island is easier; for a long day Potsdam fills all the time available.
Weather and season
In rain or great cold, Museum Island is the right choice: everything is sheltered. Potsdam is made for fine days, from May to October, when all the palaces and pavilions in the park are open. In winter the New Palace closes earlier (4:30pm from November to March) and can only be visited on a guided tour.
The day of the week
On Monday all the museums on Museum Island are closed; it is a day for Potsdam, where the New Palace is open while Sanssouci Palace closes on Mondays. On Tuesday it is the other way round: Sanssouci is open and the New Palace closed. At weekends both are busier; arrive early.
The closures to know about
The Pergamon Museum, one of the best-known museums on the island, is closed until 4 June 2027; the neighbouring Panorama shows works from Pergamon. In Potsdam, Cecilienhof Palace, where the 1945 conference took place, has been closed since 1 November 2024. These two closures do not remove the appeal of either option: the Neues Museum and Nefertiti for the island, Sanssouci for Potsdam.
