Before you go up
- Season: open-air rooftops mostly open from spring to autumn and can close in bad weather. Out of season, only the hotel bar stays open all year.
- No booking: several places work without reservations; arrive early in the evening, especially at weekends and at sunset.
- Cash: keep a little cash for any entrance fee and the small counters; see our guide to paying in Berlin.
- Prices: expect an ordinary city cocktail price in the hotel bars, noticeably less in the car-park rooftops.
Klunkerkranich, the garden on the Neukölln car park

The Klunkerkranich, Karl-Marx-Straße 66, 12043 Berlin, sits on the roof of the Neukölln Arcaden car park. It is an urban garden with tables, plants, live music and DJs, and a view over the city's rooftops as far as the television tower. Entry is charged in the evening, a few euros at most according to the sources consulted, and sometimes free earlier in the day. The season's opening hours we consulted run from 4 pm until late at night, Thursday to Sunday. Access: U7 Rathaus Neukölln, a few steps from Karl-Marx-Straße; you go up through the shopping centre to the top level of the car park.
Deck 5, the beach on the roof in Prenzlauer Berg
Deck 5, Schönhauser Allee 79, 10439 Berlin, is a beach bar on the fifth level of the Schönhauser Allee Arcaden car park in Prenzlauer Berg. Sand, deckchairs and music give it a seaside feel, and the view takes in the neighbourhood's rooftops. According to the information consulted it generally opens in the afternoon and closes at midnight. Access: S-Bahn and U-Bahn Schönhauser Allee. Combine it with a stroll through Prenzlauer Berg or an evening at the Mauerpark.
Monkey Bar, cocktails with a view of the zoo
The Monkey Bar, Budapester Straße 40, 10787 Berlin, is on the 10th floor of the 25hours Hotel Bikini Berlin, in the Bikini Berlin complex. Its terrace overlooks the zoo and the Tiergarten, with the tower of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church a little further off. It is the smartest of our three bars: carefully made cocktails, a hotel crowd and frequent queues at sunset. It is open late, from 1 pm Monday to Friday and from noon at weekends according to the hours consulted. Access: S-Bahn and U-Bahn Zoologischer Garten.
Viewpoints that are not bars
If the view matters more than the drink, several sites open onto the city:
- The Reichstag: the glass dome and the roof terrace, free but with prior registration.
- The TV tower at Alexanderplatz: the highest platform in the city, paid entry.
- The Humboldt Forum, the Zoo next to Bikini Berlin and Potsdamer Platz for more urban views.
Choosing by mood
- Zoo view and a smart atmosphere: the Monkey Bar.
- Party, music and a view of the rooftops: the Klunkerkranich.
- A beach on a car park, in the afternoon: Deck 5.
- Drinking outdoors among greenery rather than up high: our Berlin beer gardens.
