Mauerpark, on the edge of Prenzlauer Berg and Wedding, lies on the former border strip of the Berlin Wall, which was off limits from 1961 to 1989. The park opened on 9 November 1994, five years to the day after the fall of the Wall, to designs by landscape architect Gustav Lange. Every Sunday, from 10am to 6pm, the Flohmarkt im Mauerpark sets up at its southern end, along Bernauer Straße: around 400 to 450 stalls, according to its operator. Entry is free. In the afternoon, when it is not raining, the Bearpit Karaoke draws hundreds of spectators to the park's amphitheatre.
Highlights

The flea market
Bric-a-brac, antique furniture, second-hand clothes, records, toys, jewellery and handmade accessories: the market mixes private sellers clearing out their attics with professional dealers. The covered aisles and open-air stalls take one to two hours to browse.

The bric-a-brac stalls
Crockery, lamps, frames, cutlery and knick-knacks pile up on the private sellers' tables. Prices are not always marked: ask, and haggle politely.

Bearpit Karaoke
Started in 2009 by Joe Hatchiban, this open-air karaoke takes place in the park's stone amphitheatre, with one microphone and two loudspeakers. Anyone can volunteer to sing in front of an audience of several hundred people; the show is free. It starts around 3pm on Sundays, and only in good weather.
The food court
In the middle of the market, a food area brings together street food and drinks stalls, with seating for a break between aisles.
The hinterland wall
On the east side of the park, a stretch of the "Hinterlandmauer", the inner border wall on the East Berlin side, is a listed historic monument. The park rules allow graffiti on the side facing the park: the murals there are constantly painted over.

Tips
Bring cash: many sellers are private individuals. The market operator warns of pickpockets: keep money and valuables close to your body, especially in the afternoon crowds. Bearpit Karaoke depends on the weather and on its organiser: check its social media before coming specifically for it.
