Urban Nation, the street art museum

The Urban Nation museum, Bülowstraße 7 in Schöneberg, stages temporary exhibitions of contemporary urban art and is generally free to enter. Around it, the "One Wall" murals turn the neighbourhood's gable walls into an open-air gallery. It is the best starting point if you want to understand the artists and techniques before you stroll: a free media guide goes with the current exhibition.

The East Side Gallery

The East Side Gallery, on Mühlenstraße, is the city's longest open-air gallery: a stretch of the Wall on which artists from around the world painted murals from 1990. It is open at any hour. Do not write on it or touch the paintings: respect the signs. The easiest way is to walk it from Ostbahnhof towards the Oberbaumbrücke, with the sun behind you in the late afternoon.

Haus Schwarzenberg and the courtyards of Mitte

A short walk from Hackescher Markt, Haus Schwarzenberg, Rosenthaler Straße 39, is a building courtyard whose walls are covered in posters, stencils, collages and installations. It never stops changing. You can see it in ten minutes and it combines well with the neighbouring Hackesche Höfe: the mood is more hand-made than that of the big murals. The courtyard is a public place: do not block the way for photos.

RAW-Gelände in Friedrichshain

The RAW-Gelände, Revaler Straße 99, is a former railway depot turned into a complex of clubs, bars, climbing halls and painted walls. Come by day for the murals, in the evening for the nightlife. The walls are repainted regularly: what you see is not what last year's photos show. See also our guide to Friedrichshain.

Kreuzberg: the astronaut and the big gable murals

Kreuzberg was the cradle of Berlin street art. One of its best-known works is the astronaut by the artist Victor Ash, painted in 2007 on a large gable wall on Mariannenstraße. It can be seen from the street, without entering anywhere. Other murals line Oranienstraße and the area around the Oberbaumbrücke: our guide to Kreuzberg gives the neighbourhood map.

Mauerpark: the wall of legal graffiti

The Mauerpark in Prenzlauer Berg is a park on the former border strip. A long wall there is dedicated to legal graffiti: on Sundays, flea market day, you often meet artists painting. The murals change from week to week. Our guide to Prenzlauer Berg covers the rest of the district.

A one-day route

  1. Morning: Urban Nation in Schöneberg (the museum opens at noon from Thursday to Sunday, at 10am on Tuesday and Wednesday), then the "One Wall" murals around Nollendorfplatz.
  2. Early afternoon: metro to Kreuzberg, the big gable murals of Mariannenstraße and Oranienstraße.
  3. Late afternoon: cross the Oberbaumbrücke, then walk the East Side Gallery towards Ostbahnhof.
  4. Evening: RAW-Gelände for dinner or a drink.

Practical tips

  • Photography: soft light in the morning; in the evening, west-facing walls are better lit. Our photo spots in Berlin complete the route.
  • Guided tour: Urban Nation offers guided tours of the neighbourhood's street art in five languages, by booking and at a group rate (from €120 as seen in October 2026); other organisers offer tailor-made circuits.
  • Respect: do not paint or scrape the works, do not climb the walls; part of the street art is on private property.
  • Maps: works disappear quickly; ask at the museum desk or a local guide what is visible right now.
  • Free: all these outdoor visits are free; our guide to free activities in Berlin lists more.
