The covered market halls
Berlin inherited a series of municipal halls built in the late nineteenth century. A few are still in business, and Berliners use them for eating out too.
Markthalle Neun, the liveliest
In eastern Kreuzberg, the Markthalle Neun dates from 1891. The "small market" runs Monday to Thursday and the big market on Friday and Saturday, and the Street Food Thursday fills the hall with stalls serving food from around the world every Thursday from 5pm to 10pm. The hall closes on Sundays, except for its themed markets.
Marheineke Markthalle, the neighbourhood hall

The Marheineke Markthalle, opened in 1892, is a 2,500 m² hall in the Bergmannkiez. It is quieter and more rooted in neighbourhood life than the Markthalle Neun: butcher, cheese counter, fish, bread, flowers, cafés and food counters. A flea market takes place on the square in front of the hall on Saturdays and Sundays.
Arminiusmarkthalle, in Moabit
West of the centre, in the Moabit district, the Arminiusmarkthalle is an 1891 hall that combines traditional stalls, restaurants and cafés. Market directories list it as open Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm and Saturday from 8am to 6pm, but the food stalls keep their own hours.
The neighbourhood markets
These open-air markets are held on a square, often two days a week. They sell fruit and vegetables, cheese, bread and takeaway food, and are used by local residents.
The Maybachufer Turkish Market

The Maybachufer Turkish Market runs along the canal on the Neukölln side, on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11am to 6:30pm. It is known for its affordable fruit and vegetables, herbs, spices, fabrics and Turkish specialities to eat on the spot. Friday is generally the busiest day.
The Winterfeldtmarkt

On Winterfeldtplatz in Schöneberg, the Winterfeldtmarkt takes place on Wednesdays from 8am to 2pm and Saturdays from 8am to 4pm. It is Berlin's largest open-air market: over 200 stalls selling fruit and vegetables, organic produce, flowers, cheese and street food. On Saturdays, the square draws locals and visitors alike.
Kollwitzplatz and Boxhagener Platz
In Prenzlauer Berg, the organic market on Kollwitzplatz is held on Thursdays and Saturdays, with certified organic produce from Brandenburg and artisan bread. Its hours vary between directories: check them before you go. In Friedrichshain, the Boxhagener Platz market takes place on Saturdays from 9am to 3:30pm, with farm produce and takeaway food; our guide to Friedrichshain places the neighbourhood. In Charlottenburg, the Karl-August-Platz market is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8am to 2pm.
The weekend flea markets
| Flea market | Days and hours | Address |
|---|---|---|
| Mauerpark | Sunday 10am-6pm | Bernauer Straße, Prenzlauer Berg |
| Boxhagener Platz | Sunday 10am-6pm | Boxhagener Platz, Friedrichshain |
| Arkonaplatz | Sunday 10am-4pm | Arkonaplatz 1, Mitte |
| Straße des 17. Juni | Saturday and Sunday 10am-5pm | Straße des 17. Juni 106, Charlottenburg |
| Marheinekeplatz | Saturday 10am-4pm, Sunday 11am-5pm | Marheinekeplatz, Kreuzberg |
The Straße des 17. Juni market has existed since 1973 and is considered Berlin's oldest flea market. The Mauerpark is the best known, with its open-air karaoke in good weather. The others are quieter and more focused on bric-a-brac and books.
Combining markets in one day
- Saturday in Kreuzberg and Schöneberg: Winterfeldtmarkt in the morning, then the Marheineke Markthalle and its flea market before they close.
- Friday in Kreuzberg and Neukölln: the Maybachufer in the afternoon, then the Markthalle Neun, open until 8pm. Our guide to Kreuzberg covers the neighbourhood.
- Thursday evening: the Street Food Thursday at the Markthalle Neun, from 5pm to 10pm.
- Sunday: the Mauerpark for the flea market and karaoke, or the Boxhagener Platz flea market.
- In December: Berlin's Christmas markets take over.
Practical tips
- Cash: many market stalls do not accept cards. Keep small notes. Our guide to paying in Berlin explains the customs.
- Sunday: the halls and neighbourhood markets are closed; only the flea markets and themed markets are open.
- Bags: bring a reusable bag.
- Crowds: in busy markets, keep your belongings close.
