Şehitlik Mosque: visiting Neukölln's great mosque

Updated on October 5, 2026

The Şehitlik Mosque stands at Columbiadamm 128 (10965 Berlin), on the edge of Tempelhofer Feld, in the Neukölln district. Built in the late 1990s and inaugurated in the early 2000s in the classical Ottoman style, with a central dome and two minarets, it is one of the largest mosques in Berlin. It is run by the DITIB Şehitlik community and can be visited outside prayer times, free of charge. It adjoins the Turkish Martyrs' Cemetery, one of the oldest Muslim burial grounds in Germany: the land was granted to the Ottoman embassy in the 19th century. Together, the mosque and the cemetery tell the story of the Turkish and Muslim presence in Berlin.

Highlights

The façade and minarets

The façade and minarets

Seen from Columbiadamm, the mosque combines pale stone, a dome and slender minarets. It photographs well from outside, from the entrance courtyard.

The prayer hall

The prayer hall

Inside, the dome, the calligraphy and the stained glass make the hall luminous. You enter without shoes; women are asked to cover their hair (scarves are usually available). Speak quietly and do not walk in front of people at prayer.

The Turkish Martyrs' Cemetery

Next to the mosque, it holds the graves of Ottoman diplomats and soldiers, among others. Walk through it quietly: it is a place of reflection.

Guided tours

The community offers tours of about an hour, free of charge, covering the basics of the faith, the architecture, calligraphy, the history of the cemetery and community life. Book by email with the mosque ([email protected]); tours outside the usual slots are charged.

Tips

Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) and bring socks. Avoid prayer times, especially Friday midday, and during Ramadan respect the community's rhythm. Quiet is expected: do not photograph worshippers without their consent. Combine with Tempelhofer Feld, right next door, and our Neukölln guide.
