Gardens of the World (Gärten der Welt): Chinese and Japanese gardens and a cable car in Marzahn

Updated on October 5, 2026

The Gärten der Welt in Marzahn, in the east of Berlin, bring together in one large park gardens inspired by several cultures: a Chinese garden, a Japanese garden, a Korean garden, an Oriental garden, a Balinese garden, a Christian garden and other landscaped areas. The park was extended for the 2017 International Garden Show and can also be seen from a cable car above the Marzahn landscape. It is an outing off the tourist trail, very pleasant in good weather. Allow two to three hours for the gardens, a little longer with the cable car.

Highlights

The Chinese garden

The Chinese garden

With its pavilions, ornamental rocks and pond, it is one of the largest Chinese gardens in Europe. You stroll slowly along the paths around the water.

The Japanese garden

The Japanese garden

A strolling garden with water, stones and maples that changes a great deal with the seasons. It is one of the most photographed gardens in the park, especially in autumn.

The cable car

The cable car

It starts at the Kienberg (Gärten der Welt) metro station and offers a fine view of the park, Marzahn and its housing estates. You can ride one way or return.

The other gardens

The Korean garden, the Oriental garden, the Balinese garden, the Christian garden and the European-style gardens are all in the same park. In winter some themed gardens are closed or have limited access: check the official website before you come.
