What time is sunset in Berlin?

These are guide times, accurate to about ten minutes: check the exact date in a weather app. Arrive 30 minutes early.

Free spots

Viktoriapark

The hill with the national monument gives the most convenient view from the centre: the summit terrace gets busy at sunset, so arrive half an hour early to get a spot on the lawn. U6 station Platz der Luftbrücke or Mehringdamm, about 10 minutes on foot. See the Viktoriapark page.

Tempelhofer Feld

The runway of the former Tempelhof airport

The old runway gives you Berlin's widest sky. Mind the hours: access closes at 7 pm in October, 6 pm in November, 5 pm in December and January, 8:30 pm in April, 10 pm in May, 11 pm in June and July (monthly hours, to confirm on the official site). In winter, come for late afternoon, not for the night. See the Tempelhofer Feld page.

Oberbaumbrücke and Teufelsberg

The Oberbaum Bridge is the urban sunset spot par excellence, ten minutes from the East Side Gallery. The Teufelsberg opens daily from 11 am and closes at 7 pm in October, 4:30 pm in November and December, and between 8 pm and 9:30 pm from April to September; last entry one hour before closing. In winter the sun sets before closing time, which is the best moment to go.

With a drink in hand

The Klunkerkranich terrace above the rooftops of Neukölln

The Klunkerkranich (Karl-Marx-Straße 66, Neukölln) is a garden on a car park roof: rooftop views, music, an entry fee of a few euros depending on the evening (3 to 9 EUR according to the Berlin press) and opening mostly from April to October. In Charlottenburg, the Monkey Bar (10th floor of the 25hours Hotel Bikini Berlin) looks over the Tiergarten and the zoo. Our Berlin rooftops guide lists the addresses, and the viewpoints guide covers the paid observation decks: the TV Tower is open until 11 pm from March to October, while the Panoramapunkt at Potsdamer Platz closes at 7 pm (last ride 6:30 pm), so it only works in winter.

On the water and by a lake

An evening Spree cruise takes you past Museum Island and the Reichstag in the evening light: see the Spree cruise. For a sunset over water without a boat, the Müggelsee (Borkenstrand beach, in Rahnsdorf) is the big lake in the east: see Müggelsee.

Which spot to choose

  • First evening, no budget: Viktoriapark, then dinner in Kreuzberg.
  • Photos: Oberbaumbrücke, or Teufelsberg with its domes.
  • With a drink: Klunkerkranich in summer.
  • In winter (sunset around 4 pm): Viktoriapark or the TV Tower, never Tempelhofer Feld after closing.
