Where to look to pay less

Hostels and budget hotels are plentiful in Friedrichshain, in Kreuzberg and around the main stations. Sleeping away from the city centre is reasonable as long as you are near a U-Bahn or S-Bahn station in zone AB.

  • Friedrichshain: Ostbahnhof, Warschauer Straße and Ostkreuz stations are very well served, nightlife, prices often lower than in Mitte. Avoid bar streets if you want to sleep.
  • Kreuzberg: markets, restaurants, Checkpoint Charlie and Potsdamer Platz a few stops away. The areas around Kottbusser Tor and Görlitzer Park call for caution at night.
  • Neukölln: bars and restaurants often cheaper, Tempelhofer Feld next door; main sights 20 to 30 minutes away.
  • Around the stations (Hauptbahnhof, Ostbahnhof, Südkreuz): budget hotels handy for train arrivals and departures, but more impersonal.

Hostel, budget hotel or rental?

Husemannstraße and its restored buildings in Prenzlauer Berg

  • Hostel: a dorm bed is generally the cheapest option for a solo traveller. For two, compare with a private room or a budget hotel. Check lockers, reception hours and noise.
  • Budget hotel: simple rooms, breakfast sometimes extra. Look at what is included before comparing.
  • Private rental: useful from three or four nights, with a kitchen to cut meal costs. The listing must display a registration number issued by the district; beware of any payment outside the platform.
  • Prenzlauer Berg or Charlottenburg: usually pricier, but worth considering off-season.

The City Tax: add it to the price

Since 1 January 2025, Berlin charges the City Tax (Übernachtungsteuer) of 7.5% of the net price per night, excluding VAT and extras such as breakfast. It also applies to hostels and private rentals. Check whether the displayed price includes it. Details in where to stay in Berlin.

Saving on transport

A cheap place far from the centre stops being cheap if you multiply journeys. Within Berlin the AB ticket at €4 is enough; from BER airport you need an ABC ticket at €5 (fares as of October 2026). For several days, compare the 24-hour ticket, the Berlin WelcomeCard and the Deutschlandticket in our guide to getting around Berlin. The 7-day ticket has not been sold since 1 January 2026. U-Bahn and S-Bahn run all night on Fridays and Saturdays; on weekdays night buses take over.

Tips to pay less

  • Avoid peaks: the Berlinale in February, Christmas markets and big events push prices up.
  • Book early, with free cancellation if possible.
  • Have breakfast outside rather than the hotel option, or cook if you have a kitchen.
  • Keep money for sightseeing: see our free things to do in Berlin and the free museums.
