Places to approach with care

A BVG metro train near the Oberbaumbrücke

Berlin police designate "crime-burdened places" (kriminalitätsbelastete Orte) where they may carry out checks without specific grounds. These areas are not off-limits to visitors, but it is better to cross them alert, especially after dark:

  • Alexanderplatz: very busy, with many thefts (pickpocketing, shoplifting), assaults and group violence; the square and its station are named among the most affected. See the Alexanderplatz page.
  • Kottbusser Tor ("Kotti"): drug dealing and tension around the U1/U8 station; walk through without stopping.
  • Görlitzer Park and Wrangelkiez: drug dealing, mostly after dark; see the Görlitzer Park page.
  • Warschauer Straße bridge: big weekend crowds of partygoers, with thefts and fights reported.
  • Hermannplatz and Hermannstraße in Neukölln: commotion and petty crime in the evening.

Elsewhere, the going-out districts (Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg, Neukölln) are lively late and can be walked without trouble if you stay on busy streets. Large parks such as the Tiergarten are best avoided alone at night, as in any big city.

Getting home at night: metro, bus, taxi

  • Metro: on Friday-to-Saturday and Saturday-to-Sunday nights (and before public holidays), the BVG runs almost all U-Bahn lines all night, every 15 minutes; the U4 and a few suburban sections are excluded.
  • Night buses: on other nights, night bus lines (N) replace the metro, and the M tram lines provide part of the service.
  • Taxi and ride-hailing: taxis can be hailed or booked by phone or app; ride-hailing apps such as Uber or FreeNow also work. Get into a car marked as a taxi or the one you booked.
  • On foot: along lit main streets rather than through shortcuts in parks or courtyards.

Tickets and zones are detailed in our guide to transport in Berlin.

Habits for an evening out

  • Drinks: keep your glass in view and never leave it unattended. In many Berlin bars, someone who feels uncomfortable can discreetly ask "Ist Luisa hier?" ("Is Luisa here?"): it is the code that alerts staff.
  • Theft: phone and wallet in an inside pocket, bag closed in front of you, especially in packed bars, clubs and on the metro.
  • Alcohol and the street: drinking is tolerated, but drunkenness makes you vulnerable; see alcohol in the street in Berlin.
  • Drugs: do not buy anything on the street; cannabis remains subject to strict rules, explained in our guide to cannabis in Berlin.
  • Clubs: queues, searches at the entrance and door rules are covered in our guide to getting into a club in Berlin. In case of harassment, talk to the venue's security staff.

Solo women and LGBT travellers

Berlin has a reputation as an open city, and late nights out are common for women on their own. The same precautions apply as elsewhere: take the night metro in a group when possible, choose a taxi over a long late walk, and report any harassment to a BVG employee or bar staff. For LGBT travellers, the city is known as welcoming, but isolated assaults sometimes occur outside bars: our LGBT Berlin guide gives addresses and useful advice.

If something goes wrong

  • 112: medical emergency or fire, free, across the European Union.
  • 110: police, free.
  • Lost or stolen documents: report it to the police and to your embassy or consulate; keep a copy of your papers.
  • Injury or illness: see our guide to health and emergencies in Berlin.
