Görlitzer Park: Kreuzberg's park, its reputation and visitor tips

Updated on October 9, 2026

Görlitzer Park, known to Berliners as "Görli", is a large park of about fifteen hectares in the heart of Kreuzberg, laid out on the site of the former Görlitz railway station, closed in 1951. Lawns, shaded paths and a children's farm make it a busy gathering place as soon as the weather turns warm. It also has a difficult reputation: Berlin police classify it as a high-crime area, mainly because of drug dealing. Entry is free and the park can be visited without problems by day, with a few precautions.

Highlights

The big lawns

The big lawns

In the middle of the park, wide meadows ringed by Kreuzberg apartment blocks serve as playground, picnic spot and promenade. Under snow, children go sledding here. It is the best place to feel Kreuzberg today: family-friendly, young and very mixed.

Paths and trees

Paths and trees

In the open part of the park, young trees planted among the lawns add colour in autumn. The park links Görlitzer Straße, Wiener Straße and the Landwehrkanal bank, and works as a shortcut between the neighbouring shopping streets.

Tips

Berlin police classify Görlitzer Park and the Wrangelkiez as "crime-burdened places" (kriminalitätsbelastete Orte), where officers may carry out checks without specific grounds; cannabis and other drug dealing is visible, especially after dark. Dealers sometimes approach visitors: a firm "no thanks" without stopping is enough. Do not buy anything: selling remains illegal, tourists included (see our rules on cannabis in Berlin), and quality is unknown. Come by day or in the early evening and keep your belongings on you; pickpocketing exists here as in any busy place. Night closing: the Senate had decided to close the park every evening (at 10 pm, or 11 pm from mid-May to 22 September) from 1 March 2026, but the Berlin administrative court suspended the measure in June 2026 and the park stayed open; the situation may still change, so check the signs at the entrances. Inside the park, the Kinderbauernhof Görlitzer Park children's farm (Wiener Straße 59) is free. Around the park, Kreuzberg's streets are full of cafés, Turkish eateries and world cuisine; the Maybachufer Turkish market is within walking distance. Also read: Kreuzberg and Berlin at night.

How to get there

U1 to Görlitzer Bahnhof, right next to the park, or U1 to Schlesisches Tor, a few minutes from the east entrance. Friedrichshain is about a 15-minute walk across the Oberbaumbrücke.

Opening hours

Best: A fine afternoon
Open access all year. No night closing has been enforced since the court decision of June 2026; a closing at 10 pm (11 pm from mid-May to 22 September) was decided and could be reinstated. The children's farm has its own hours, shorter in winter
