Altes Museum Berlin: Berlin's Greek and Roman Antiquities on Museum Island

Updated on October 5, 2026

The Altes Museum, Am Lustgarten on Museum Island, presents the Greek, Etruscan and Roman antiquities of the Berlin State Museums behind an Ionic colonnade that faces the Lustgarten. It is the island's first museum: built by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, it opened in 1830. It is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm; a ticket costs €14, free for under-18s. Allow about an hour and a half for your visit.

Highlights

Schinkel's façade

Schinkel's façade

Eighteen Ionic columns and a broad staircase open onto the Lustgarten, facing the Berlin Cathedral. Schinkel applied the idea of a temple of art in the heart of the city.

The rotunda

At the centre of the building, a rotunda inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, ringed with columns, holds ancient statues. It is the most photographed room in the museum.

Greek art

Painted vases, sculptures and small bronzes illustrate Greek art from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period.

Etruscans and Rome

The collections also present Etruscan art, with ceramics, bronzes and everyday objects, and Roman art, with portraits of emperors and sarcophagi.
