Maybachufer Turkish Market: Berlin's Canalside Market in Neukölln, Tuesdays and Fridays
The Turkish Market (Türkenmarkt) takes place twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays from 11am to 6:30pm, along the Maybachufer, the Neukölln bank of the Landwehrkanal, facing Kreuzberg. Fruit and vegetables, herbs, spices, olives, cheeses, fabrics and ribbons are laid out under awnings, and food stalls sell snacks to eat on the spot: gözleme, börek and more. Its nickname dates from the late 1960s, when Turkish guest workers found here the products from home that supermarkets did not stock. Depending on the source, the market has between 150 and 180 stalls.
Highlights

The fruit and vegetable stalls
Piles of tomatoes, peppers, squash and fresh herbs at prices known to be affordable. You choose at the stall and pay at the stall.

The market aisles
The market stretches along the canal under awnings. Local residents do their weekly shopping here, and the aisles fill up quickly.

The Landwehrkanal
The market runs along the canal, which you can follow on foot between the trees. Take your purchases to eat on the bank, facing the water.
The food stalls
Gözleme (filled flatbreads), börek and other Turkish specialities: the market is ideal for a quick lunch on the go.
Fabrics and ribbons
Some stalls sell fabrics and ribbons, a specialty of the market alongside the fresh produce.
The flea market
A flea market, the Nowkoelln Flowmarkt, takes place about 650 m from the market every other Sunday (10am-5pm): an option for Sundays, when the Turkish market is closed.

Tips
Bring cash: this is an open-air market, and cards are not accepted everywhere. Friday is generally the busiest day; for a calmer stroll, try Tuesday. Keep your belongings close in the crowd. The market does not take place at the weekend: for a Sunday market, see the Mauerpark flea market, and for a covered hall the Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg.
