Museum Berggruen in Berlin: Picasso, Klee and Matisse opposite the palace (closed for renovation)

Updated on October 9, 2026

The Museum Berggruen, Schloßstraße 1 in Charlottenburg, houses one of Berlin's finest collections of classical modern art: Picasso, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse and Alberto Giacometti, brought together by the art dealer and collector Heinz Berggruen. It occupies the Stülerbau West, a former barracks building designed in the mid-19th century by the architect Friedrich August Stüler, opposite Charlottenburg Palace. It belongs to the Nationalgalerie and it is closed: the museum shut on 5 September 2022 for a complete renovation of the building (roof, façades, basement waterproofing, technical systems). At the time of writing (October 2026), the website of the Berlin State Museums gives no reopening date: check it before you travel. During the works the collection is touring the world (Japan, China, Venice, Paris, Australia, Madrid, Houston), and a stop in Miami is announced from October 2026. In Berlin, the neighbouring Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg, devoted to Surrealism, remains open: it is the best alternative on the spot.

Highlights

The Stülerbau West

The Stülerbau West

The neoclassical domed building opposite Charlottenburg Palace is a listed monument. While it is closed, you can admire it from the outside: its pale façade and dome are worth a stop before or after the palace.

A prestigious neighbour

A prestigious neighbour

The Stülerbau West and its twin, the Stülerbau East (home of the Scharf-Gerstenberg), frame the Schloßstraße. Allow a few minutes' walk from one to the other, then a short stroll to the palace's cour d'honneur.

The reference collections

When the museum reopens, it will again present the great names of 20th-century art: many works by Picasso, paintings and drawings by Paul Klee, Matisse cut-outs and Giacometti's elongated sculptures. As the exact displays have not been announced, wait for the reopening before planning a detailed visit.

The open alternative

The Sammlung Scharf-Gerstenberg, Schloßstraße 70, presents Surrealist art and its precursors (Goya, Piranesi, then Dalí, Ernst, Magritte, Dubuffet). It is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 18:00; admission €10 (reduced €5), free for under-18s.

Tips

Do not count on the Museum Berggruen for your trip until a reopening date is published: check the museum's page on the State Museums website (smb.museum). If you are hesitating between a pass and separate tickets for the open museums in Charlottenburg, see our comparison WelcomeCard or Museumspass and our guide to the Museumspass Berlin, which also flags the closed museums. Scharf-Gerstenberg prices checked in October 2026.

How to get there
