Expect to pay roughly €25 to €100 a night for a hostel or budget hotel, €100 to €250 for a mid-range hotel and from about €250 for a five-star hotel. For a first visit, stay in Mitte (Alexanderplatz, Rosenthaler Platz) or near Unter den Linden; Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg offer better value and are well connected by U-Bahn and S-Bahn. Prices are indicative rates for a double room (hostels: per bed), before the 7.5% City Tax, and should be checked before you book.

Where to stay in Berlin at a glance

How this selection was made

The hotels below are real, existing properties chosen for their location (central or well connected by U-Bahn and S-Bahn), their category and their price level. This is not an objective ranking or a review tested by Berlin Authority: prices are indicative nightly rates for a double room, taken from booking comparison sites, and they change with the season, dates, availability and current offers; check the exact price for your dates on Booking. Always check the up-to-date rate on the hotel's own website or a booking platform. Remember the City Tax of 7.5% of the net room price, explained in our guide Where to stay in Berlin.

Budget hotels and hostels (€25 to €100/night)

Husemannstraße and its restored buildings in Prenzlauer Berg

Indicative prices, excluding City Tax, and liable to vary widely by date.

For a solo traveller, a dorm bed at The Circus Hostel is still the cheapest option in the heart of Mitte. As a couple, a&o Berlin Friedrichshain offers affordable private rooms in the nightlife district. Arriving by train, MEININGER Hotel Berlin Hauptbahnhof saves you any change of train, while Generator Berlin Prenzlauer Berg suits you if you accept being further out to pay less.

Tips for paying less

  • Pick your dates: January and February are usually the cheapest months; prices rise during the Berlinale, the year-end holidays and big trade fairs. See our guide to the best time to visit Berlin.
  • Choose well-connected areas rather than the very centre: Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg are often cheaper than Mitte, with the S-Bahn and U-Bahn close by. Check the direct line to the sights you want with our guide to getting around Berlin.
  • Budget for the City Tax: 7.5% of the net room price (excluding VAT and breakfast), or about €7.50 for a room at €100 before VAT.
  • Read what is included: breakfast, bed linen, towels or a locker are sometimes extra in hostels; compare the total price.
  • Beware of unregistered rentals: in Berlin, a short-term rental listing must show a registration number. Avoid listings without one and never pay outside the platform.

Mid-range hotels, good value (€100 to €250/night)

Savignyplatz, in the heart of Charlottenburg

Indicative prices, excluding City Tax.

In Mitte, Motel One Berlin-Alexanderplatz is the safe choice for a first visit. In Friedrichshain, Michelberger Hotel and nhow Berlin put the East Side Gallery within walking distance. For a calm stay, Hotel Oderberger in Prenzlauer Berg is ideal. In the west, Ellington Hotel Berlin and 25hours Hotel Bikini Berlin suit shopping and zoo fans, and Hotel Orania.Berlin is a characterful address in Kreuzberg.

Luxury hotels (5 stars, from €250/night)

The Bode-Museum at the end of Am Kupfergraben, in Mitte

Indicative prices, excluding City Tax.

For a classic night near the centre, Hotel Adlon Kempinski and Hotel de Rome put the landmarks and museums within walking distance. In the west, Waldorf Astoria Berlin is right by the Kurfürstendamm; for peace beside the Tiergarten, choose Das Stue.

The best hotels in Berlin: quick picks by profile

If you want the short answer to "best hotels in Berlin", here are the choices drawn from the tables above (our selection, not a tested ranking):

  • First visit: Motel One Berlin-Alexanderplatz (Mitte), from €100, or The Circus Hostel (Mitte) to save money. Most sights are on foot or a few stops away.
  • Couple: Hotel Oderberger (Prenzlauer Berg), from €140, with pool and sauna; Hotel Orania.Berlin (Kreuzberg), from €200, for a characterful address.
  • Family: MEININGER Hotel Berlin Hauptbahnhof, from €65, with rooms for several people and direct access to trains. See also Where to stay in Berlin with family.
  • Tight budget: a&o Berlin Friedrichshain, from €60, or a dorm bed at The Circus Hostel, from €25.
  • Nightlife and East Side Gallery: Michelberger Hotel, from €110, three minutes from Warschauer Straße station.
  • Shopping and a classic stay: 25hours Hotel Bikini Berlin, from €130, with a rooftop terrace.
  • A treat: Hotel Adlon Kempinski, from €330, facing the Brandenburg Gate.

Common mistakes: choosing the cheapest room far from a station (15 minutes' walk costs more in time than it saves in money); assuming a hotel "near Alexanderplatz" is on the square, when it may be a 15-minute walk away; and forgetting weekend noise in Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. From BER airport, the S9 line and the FEX express train reach the centre: see our guide to Berlin BER airport.
